Sustainability is core to First Nations Culture. Therefore we want to commit to sustainable approaches when manufacturing and designing our garments.
We all hold a reasonability to care for Country so Country can care for us. This can start by reflecting on our attitude towards fashion and making more sustainable choices.

Sustainable choices

  • Linen Fabric

Most of our garments are 100% linen. Linen is made from flax fibre and very eco-friendly. It uses considerably lower resources to grow and requires no pesticides. There is zero waste from the plant and fabric is biodegradable.

Linen is also a very durable fabric and when looked after, can last up to 30 years. This ensures longevity of all our garments and embeds the standard of wearable art to our brand.

  • Manufacturing

We work with an ethical and sustainable business, The Social Studio, the produce all our garments. They are a not-for-profit social enterprise using fashion and creativity to create work and learning opportunities for Melbourne’s refugee and new migrant communities. Read more about their non-for-profit business via their website: www.thesocialstudio.org

We also manufacture very limited quantities to ensure products sell out leaving zero waste. Off-cuts are also re-used to create earrings and other accessory pieces.

  • Desgin

To reduce waste, Yapa Mali avoids designing to ever changing trends. Our garments are staple and timeless pieces, suited for all shapes, sizes, ages and made to last! We wanted to ensure high quality product that can we re-worn and loved for a life time.
